I will admit first that I am fairly new to airsoft. I mostly am into cars. As far as the cars, I mod and many people mod their cars. Intakes, exhaust, turbos, and nitrous, etc....
As far as airsoft, do people get heavy into modding or is it more "customizing"(as far as a site, grips, silencers...) Is there a "peak" performance that you can attain w/ the internal parts of the guns or what??? Someone, please just give me a run down??? Thanks

It depends. When you say mod, do you mean upgrade? A lot of people upgrade their guns, to get better performance out of their gun. Like you can upgrade the spring with a stronger spring to get a higher fps (feet per second). You can upgrade the gears to get a faster rof (rate of fire). As well as upgraded the motor to get a faster rof. It all depends. So basically you can upgrade every part of the gearbox, including the gearbox itself (to support a stronger spring, and whatnot), as well as the motor, the hopup, the barrel, and everything else. You can also upgrade the externals of your gun to, yes, make it more custom, or look cooler. You can get new sites, a new flashhider, a free float RIS unit, different grips, different stock, and a new body.
When upgrading a gun to get "peak" performance, it all depends. Because when you upgrade a gun, unless your just replacing a part, or getting a reinforced part like a reinforced gearbox, gears, piston, ect....usually your cutting the life down of the AEG. Lets say you want your gun to shoot hella hard...well, pop a Systema M120 in it, or a PDI 190% spring in it.....but, your risking the life of the gun. Because the spring will put more stress on the gearbox, resulting in hardcore wear, which in the end, will end up cracking your gearbox...shredding your gears, which will shred your piston, maybe bust the anti reverse latch..It depends. So when you do end up lets say upgrading a spring to a 450fps spring, your gonna need to replace other parts to help support it, like getting a new piston, piston head, anti reverse latch...maybe new gears, and a new hopup bucking (when you upgrade your gun with a stronger spring, you should usually replace the bucking with a hard bucking).
So yeah, I do like to upgrade my guns internally. But I usually dont upgrade them too much. Although I did do a total overhaul in my A&K M4 S-system (M110 spring, prometheus piston, piston head, anti reverse latch, systema bushings, TM cylinder, and cylinder head). And with my G3SAS, it had mad upgraded internals too (not sure of em all). But usually I will put an M110 or M100 spring in my gun, new systema bushings, and maybe a new piston head (bushings and piston head to support the spring) to make it shoot a little harder, but keeping it reasonable at the same time. And when something needs replacing, then yeah, I upgrade it usually.
For external upgrading, I try to make my guns custom. Like with my TM Mp5k's, I put M4 retractable stocks on them, which you dont usually see. And they look really cool. And with my ICS M15, I put a full stock on it, a Knights Arms free float RIS unit on it, and a knights arms flashhider on it. With my ICS M4 RIS, I put an ICS QD silencer on it, and a cheek rest on it, with an NC Star scope, which gives it the sniper look. And I tried the custom paintjob thing, but it wasnt for me. But I still try to change it up a bit, to make it more custom, but I try to keep it realistic too.
........eyes tired yet?.......lol. And anymore questions? Or any specific questions? Lol.

Yes a lot of people "mod" or upgrade you guns. I think AkWolf puts it very well, I personally only lightly mod my guns. My favorite upgrades are tight bore barrels, m100-m110 springs, and I have to have a 9.6v battery. Having 450fps is cool and everything but I'm more about reliability as I don't feel like rebuilding my mechbox. You can't have everything so I chose to increase my fps a little and gain some accuracy and have an overall reliable weapon. I don't really do much if anything externally as I like how my guns look already and lights, lasers, scopes, and whatnot just seem to clutter the gun up as they don't have much tactical value. It's all user preference though.

Thanks guys I figured that in any hobby, if you can upgrade something, people will. I did read about a silent piston or something. Interesting.....How much can you tell a difference(any experiences) ? I like the sniper look(esp. the burlap wrapped sniper rifles) but, that just wouldnt look right on an MP5 so idk. I am thinking silencer and red dot sight for starters. Internal upgrades would be the main focus. I have always been more performance over looks type of guy.

for an Mp5 i would go with these. But it depends on the brand.
M110 spring Systema busings If it isnt a high grade gun, then put a TM or Prometheus piston head in it. That should be it for internals at first. And then later on, upgrade what you want to be better (speed, fps, accuracy).
For externals, I'd go with a silencer, and thats really it. If you want to make it into a more long range, sniper type gun, then go with the swordfish mod. But it doesnt look very good.
Oh, and if you plan on getting an Mp5, go with an ICS Mp5a4 (full stock version). I would go with CA for an Mp5. And TM is ok, but doesnt have the metal body. So ICS is the best high quality Mp5 brand. Or just go with a JG, or Echo1. Your choice.

ICS is the best for MP5's in my opinion, CA is good as well. I definitely recommend a full stock so you can fit a big battery, take this from a guy who has no full stock guns.

Yeah lol. Full stock is best. Nun-chuck batteries get annoying lol. But Nate, if you want, I have a spare full stock i could sell ya or something.

What do the Systema bushings do??? As far as full stock vs no full stock. I do like the no full stock look better. idk. Decisions, decisions. As far as this "swordfish" model??? pics/links??? I dont know what most of that stuff means in the above posts so I will just have to ask my resident "expert" aka Nat77 hgahahahaa Thanks.

bushings are the little round pieces in the gearbox, that keep the gears, and anti reverse latch in place. They also allow the gears to spin. Systema bushings are just high grade metal bushings. Instead of the usual stock, plastic bushings.
The swordfish upgrade is basically a metal flat piece that goes on the end of the gun with RIS rails that mount on the top and bottom of the gun. Lots of times, I see people put longer inner barrels, and a silencer on the Mp5. It looks somewhat cool.
And I would go with full stock if i were you. Because the Mp5 series can hold nunchuck batteries, meaning you wont be able to use high MAH 9.6v batteries. Meaning less rof, and more batteries you have too buy. I have a spare Mp5 full stock, if you do decide to go with the sliding stock. Just to let you know.
